VEHICLE APPROACH DIRECTIONAL DISTRIBUTION SURVEYS
Los Angeles International Airport, CA
- Teams of surveyors were placed at 10 intersections on major regional routes close to Los Angeles International Airport.
- During the red “stop” phase of the signal cycle, one team member stood in the crosswalk and held up a large banner asking motorist to indicate if they were going to the airport with a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”.
- Meanwhile, other team members walked in between the travel lanes and recorded the responses.
- To ensure safety, the survey efforts were assisted by LAPD traffic officers.
FREEWAY SERVICE PATROL (FSP) RESPONSE SURVEYS
County of Los Angeles, CA
- Surveyors travelling in 6 different vehicles patrolled roughly 5-mile sections of each of 3 different freeways.
- A record was made of every incident encountered that needed a FSP vehicle response.
- As each survey vehicle passed by these incidents, a record was cumulatively compiled of when the FSP vehicle arrived and when the incident was cleared.
MARIN HEADLANDS TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS STUDY

- 8-hour counts of hikers, cyclists and horseback riders on 10 different park trails for 2 weekdays and 1 Saturday.
PASS-THROUGH TRAFFIC AND STOP SIGN VIOLATION STUDY
City of Beverly Hills, CA
- AM and PM peak period manual moving vehicle license plate surveys to identify pass-through traffic.
- Stop sign violation monitoring at 5 locations.
FLAMMABLE LIQUID CONTAINER SURVEYS
Statewide, CA
- 24 to 72 consecutive hour manual observation and video surveys of flammable liquid container truck traffic at 41 freeway tunnel locations.
- Trucks were recorded according to type, size and marked contents.
LOS ANGELES UNION STATION MASTER PLAN
Union (Train) Station, Los Angeles, CA
- 24-hour pedestrian turning movement counts at 17 locations within the station.
- A survey of pedestrian travel times along 9 routes within the station.
LOS ANGELES COUNTY “SAFE” FREEWAY CALL BOX ASSESSMENT STUDY

- In-field site observations and physical assessments of over 1,000 call box locations throughout the county.
- Assessments included physical presence, confirmation of GPS coordinates, visual condition, operational condition, distance from nearest travel lane and level of cell phone coverage at the location.
WEST SANTA ANA BRANCH TRANSIT CORRIDOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY

- 24-hour counts of the number of trains that passed by at each of 3 locations.
- Surveys were conducted for 9 consecutive days.
